April 14 to 21 in Los Angeles, they competed in the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. They earned a gold medal in both Individual Events and Overall Sweepstakes claiming the title of National Champions.  The team had seven students (Shawn Anaya, Harry Bodell, Abby Escatel, Kelsey Figiel, Matt Mayorga, Steve Perry, Subhan Suhail) break events to semi-finals/finals to score 72.5 points in Individual Events to beat second place team, Moraine Valley (67.5 points), and secure the championship.

After a long season battling it out with Moraine, Kishwaukee, and Harper at every tournament, the 10 COD team members were able to end the season on a great note.  They attend about four tournaments every semester and meet every Monday.

“We like to get together to not only prepare for tournaments, but to also just hang out and support eachother,” commented 19 year-old and first year member, Matthew Mayorga who took home a bronze award from Nationals for extemporaneous speaking. Next year he hopes to see the team go for gold again.

Students interested in joining the Forensics team can contact Lauren Morgan via e-mail at morgan@cod, or stop by the Forensics team room, SSC 1216.

The team is coached by full-time speech faculty members Lauren Morgan (Director), Jude Geiger, Chris Miller, Mia Poston, and alumnus, Matt Beifuss.
